The Good Mess - Sargent in Granada

July 30, 2026

Sargent was a magician of light and shadow, producing velvets, silks and satins with a paintbrush for his formal portraits of aristocrats in their grand salons. His plein air works feel different, earthy, real women in exotic places, people in their moments, their lives and their work. I really looked at his painting, Court of the Myrtles, Palacio de Comares in Granada… the shapes of the architecture, shadows, light and reflections. I wanted to work this image in collage with bold colors that I have never worked with. Another journey, painting, tearing, fitting, building. In the end, something I have never done worked out well.
