Many Skies - Tarot Reading Cloth
The Unalome, ancient symbol rooted in Buddhism, found in Hinduism, representing the labyrinth, the spiral, third eye of Shiva… maps of the spiritual journey towards enlightenment…
I painted this long piece on finely woven artist’s cotton in the colors of many skies…the rose dore of dawns, violet grays of storms, blue grays of dusks. The soft creases in the cotton add visual and textural dimension and the absorption of paint. On the left side, there is the sense of rays of morning light breaking the night and spilling across the entire cloth. The sky is never still. Along the top and bottom horizontals, I have worked in a kind of border of fragmented symbols and shapes, like remains from antiquity. I painted the Unalone on a coarser piece of organic, unbleached artist’s cotton, appreciating its form and meaning. The symbol is calligraphic with inundating curves and a balanced flow, representing life’s joys and sorrows, hardships and rewards, the labyrinth of the journey, to infinity, to enlightenment.
The gilded paint bleeds green patina as I softened it with water and all of the colors have bled through to the reverse. They are equally beautiful on front and back and I chose not to cover them, to lose the water color effect and have left it as it dried. The reverse is not backed with velvet. Photographed in sections because of length and in different light to capture the palette and metallic bronze.
SIZE - 13” X 45” - Unalone - 4 1/2” X 9”
For your card spread, altar, framed wall art for sacred space, meditation room, yoga studio.
Prayer beads not included.
