The single and double headed eagle appears from the mid 12th century in churches, mosques, fortresses, palaces, caravanserais, and on banners, coat of arms and garments of emperors, warriors and kings. This was the symbol of magical and protective strength.
I have created a painted and hand sewn textile collage, the stylized eagle pair with sword and orb. My crown is an abstraction, loosely regal in form and anchoring the primary image with color and detail. Painted on rough gray cotton canvas with mid gray, charcoal and gild, surrounded by a triad of magical symbols from antiquity. Some symbols may be fragments of a larger piece, their meanings are unknown to me but I was attracted to them, their combinations of straight and curved lines. Each symbol was painted and cut from other cotton canvases,joined to this cloth with black hand stitchery, adding linear dimension to the overall design.
