I have a deep attraction to ancient symbols… letters, writings, sigils, glyphs, unspoken languages of voices I will never hear. Many of their meanings are simply lost to time. They find their way into my work… I don’t know if I’m singing praise, conveying messages or casting spells but it is a comfortable unknowing. Tarot joined my group of the intriguing, 15th century parlor games or fortune tellers, their seemingly literal images conceal nuance, symbolism and the mystical. I have looked for the right reading cloths to honor the decks I collect. There are none. So I began to make my own. My cloths are worked like my paintings and then develop with layering of fragments; a collage of materials, symbols, images. They are completely hand sewn. I don’t even know how to sew… I approach the sewing like line art, mark making that becomes a part of the design. It takes some time to complete a cloth. A sewing machine would make quick work of it but would also be the end of what hand made is…. with those kinds of imperfections that connect you to the maker, to feel the time that went into each piece, to realize the intention. True pieces of art, they can take their place on the wall, table, altar or become a part of your practice.
