Many Mountains Tea Set

225.00

Four hand formed tea cups & hand made wooden tray. The 16th century Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-sabi honors the beauty of imperfection and asymmetry found within the variations of creation. The cups have a satin oatmeal interior glaze and low sheen gunmetal - bronze exterior glaze. The glazes mingle on the rounded tea cup lips as the kiln has decided. Hand made pieces must always be without glaze at the very bottom to prevent the molten glazes from adhering to the kiln shelves during the firing process. Each bears Alexandria’s mark A X E. The tray is constructed from reclaimed antique French oak beams salvaged from an estate, joined with a live edge from our favorite tree, damaged by Hurricane Sandy in the fall of 2012. The handles are reminiscent of the many mountains the concept of Wabi-sabi traveled from origins in ancient India and China, to Japanese tea ceremonies and Zen Buddhism. Hand built, hand made, one of a kind.

SIZES Cups hold approximately 4 ounces and have small variations in height and width. The smallest cup is 3 1/2” tall X 2 3/4” wide, the tallest 3 3/4” tall X 3” wide. The tray floor is 6 1/2” X 14” with approximately an additional 1” of live edge border. The handles stand approximately 1 1/2” high from the tray floor. The tray has been stained and waxed and like any wood should not be soaked with water. Moisture should be blotted promptly to avoid rings.
