The woodland spirit of the Northland… fine black deerskin binds russet and iridescent dark brown rooster feathers to an antler tip. The collar and dangle are made of amber horn, antique French steel seed beads and mixed metals. Traditional people lived close to the animals that were their partners in the struggle for survival. When an animal was taken it was with great respect, gratitude and reverence for its spirit and no part was ever wasted. In may cultures, parts of animals were utilized to bestow their power, wisdom and knowledge of the natural world upon the wearer. From earliest times, horn has been a material used for trinkets, beads and jewelry, for beauty, power and the grace of the animal. Native northern woodland cultures in the Americas, Europe and Asia have honored horned animals as evidenced by some the art and artifacts they have left behind.
